6. Upper Dolpo Trek

The Dolpo region of Nepal is the most isolated region which is yet to be explored. The Upper Dolpo Trek is a restricted area that was only opened for tourism in 1989. The area belongs to the Shey Phoksundo National Park and the Upper Dolpo route goes above 4000 meters. The untouched corner close to Nepal’s Tibetan border is where this trek takes you. The Dolpo district is the largest in Nepal which is the most remote and least inhabited. You can trek in this region and not see another person for days. The people of Dolpo live a traditional and local lifestyle untouched by modernity till the day. People in this region mostly follow Bon Po religion, a religion somewhat rooted in Tibetan Buddhism with some ancient Shamanistic influences. During the trek you travel across three mountain passes, Saldang La Pass (5,060m), Jyanta La Pass (5,220m) and Kang La Pass (5,380m) each giving breathtaking views for as far as you can see. This area till today sees very few tourists as it needs special passes for foreigners to trek in this region.
